Much to my Dad's behest, Jim Carrey is one of my favourite actors. Naturally, The Grinch became a staple film around Christmas time from when I was four onwards. You'd think that this would have been the film that introduced me to Carrey, but no. I distinctly remember a nabbing my parents VHS tape of a certain little film called The Mask...
...a film that was totally inappropriate for me to be watching at that age. But no matter what Carrey was doing, I was busting out laughing. Carrey was one part of a comedy trifecta for me when I was really young. Him, Robin Williams and Rik Mayall formulated the warped sense of humor I have today. Which, is all thanks to my mum and dad letting me watch films that parents wouldn't usually let their kids watch, knowing that it would go straight over my head anyway and just leave me giggling at Carrey, Williams and Mayall and their stupid antics.
As much as my Dad hates Carrey, it is his fault that he's one of my favourite comedians/actors. My first DVD was a Christmas present of Bruce Almighty whenever that came out, for crying out loud. I didn't ask for this Carrey love, it was thrust upon me.
The Grinch has always been one of my favourite Seuss stories (my ultimate favourite being Horton Hears a Who), so to have Carrey be the titular character was a dream come true for me as a kid. And I swear, much like a majority of people my age, that I've grown up to become the Grinch. Not through hating Christmas (I love Christmas) but through everything else in life. Literally. So, not only did The Grinch help form my sense of humor, it also subconsciously made me the person I am today. No wonder I'm studying film, half my personality was shaped by them. What this is all leading up to is that again, The Grinch is a Christmas film that has weighted personal significance on me, and is one of the best Christmas films and funniest films of all time. Period.
